Mongols attack Kievan Rus
The Mongol warriors from central Asia attack and conquer Kievan Rus. Many of the Slavic people move nortward and settle in Moscow, which at the time was a trading post. -

Ivan III rises
In 1480, a Prince of Muscovy named Ivan III rises and rejects the Mongol rule. He declared Russia as Independent and is named Ivan the Great for his strong leadership. -

Ivan the Terrible rules Muscovy
Ivan the Terrible used secret police forces to carry out his will and conquered many neighboring countries by force and expanded the empire past the Ural Mountains. He ruled harshly and earned his spot from Ivan IV to Ivan the Terrible -
Russia is Invaded
Napoleon Bonaparte led french forces in 1812 to conquer Russia, but they had to march hundreds of miles to finally reach the capital. They were low on supplies and froze during the war. When they reached Moscow, it was burned and they retreaded. -
Alexander frees the serfs
Russia's people were mainly farm laborers called serfs who were bought and sold with thier land that they worked on, after Alexander II freed them the country still remained poor. -
The last czar
The Czar Nicholas II and his family are transported to a secret house where they are in house arrest for the years to come. They are executed in the house few months later. -
Gorbachev is the president
In 1985 President Mikhail Gorbachev is elected and introduces the policy of "glasnost" and "perestroika" which mean openness and restucturing. -
Boris Yeltsin reforms
In 1991, the year of the collapse of the Soviet Union, a group of reformers led by politition Boris Yeltsin felt that Gorbachev was too slow in making changes and attempted a coup, but they failed. -
