    The first high school provided young adolescents with an opportunity to continue education for free and was important for the economic growth of our nation. This was influential to the persuassion of the need of a system of public schools to educate and develop a united country.

    Board of Education Created
    Leadership from men such as Horace Mann, the first secretary of the board, helped reform the public school movement. This is the first time visions of education were put into practice and states came together to develop an agreement on the concept of organized school systems. At this time in history, education was highlighted as a priority for children.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Children of all races deserve an equal education. Although many schools remained segregated, this ruling helped to decrease the education gap of whites and black students. It gave minorities a better belief in the purpose of our school systems and the opportunity to achieve education goals they previously were restricted from.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act (now IDEA)

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act (now IDEA)
    No kid should be denied an education because of their abilities or lack thereof. Not only could students with disabilities get an education for free, but they now receive special education focused on their needs. This milestone Act is especially important for parents of disabled kids. It shows the social responsibility of our school systems to include every kid.

    A Nation at Risk
    A Nation at Risk report had a large impact on public schools, becasue it was a time the system was challenged globally. It gave the opportunity for our government to self analyze the success of our schools, find solutions to succeed, and perform better than our counterparts. It also led to other reforms in order to achieve higher standards.
