History of Myself by Garrett Oliekan

  • My Birth

    My Birth
Obviously, the fact that I was born is a significant part of my life. I was the first boy in the family so it really changed my parents routine when it came to my siblings and I. My older sister and I were born very close to each other so, as we were growing up, people often mistook us as twins (something that still occurs today).

  • My Sisters Birth

    My Sisters Birth
Similarly, my younger sisters birth also changed things lot in our family. She is my sister so her birth is important to me because otherwise she would not be here. Her birth was also the reason we moved to Arizona because my dad needed a new job and we needed a bigger house to fit all the kids.
  • My family moved to Arizona

    My family moved to Arizona
Moving to Arizona is probably the one thing that affected me the most. We have been living here for about 12 years so Arizona is pretty much the only thing that I can remember. Everything that I have done, who I know, and who I am I credit to being in Arizona with the experiences I have had that I probably wouldn't have had in Chicago.
  • My First Day of Kindergarten

    My First Day of Kindergarten
My First day of Kindergarten was another huge milestone as it marked the first time I would be away from home without my parents because I never went to preschool. I remember that I had afternoon kindergarten so my mom and I would walk around the pond next to the library feeding the ducks with french fries my mom had bought me that morning at McDonalds. I don't really remember Kindergarten that much but I do remember having fun and having my mom to myself because my dad was at work, my older sis
  • My 8th Birthday

    My 8th Birthday
My 8th birthday was also very important to me. Mainly because I was baptized into my church. But, another reason it stands out to me is because, the day before, I was playing soccer and I broke my arm. That was the first time I had broken a bone so it was a huge deal and I got to spend the night before and the whole day of my birthday in the emergency room. One of the doctors, when hearing that it was my birthday, brought a toy in and gave it to me(It was a batman action figure).
  • I met my Best Friend

    I met my Best Friend
I met probably my best friend in 5th grade, Jackson Tobler. He moved here from Iowa near the end of the first quarter. He was actually the one who introduced me to basketball, and, because of his social aptitude, introduced me to a lot of new friends. Him and one other guy who moved into my neighborhood the same time I did, have become my closest friends.
  • I started Jr. High

    I started Jr. High
The start of Jr. High was the largest transition between schools I have experienced thus far. I had heard so much negative about it that I was actually pretty nervous about changing schools. And then there was the fact that some of my friends were not going to the same Jr. High as me. But, at the same time, I was also really excited for the change and what those changes would bring.
  • I made the 8th grade basketball team

I made the 8th grade basketball team
I started Basketball in 6th grade, after Jackson invited me to play on a YMCA team with him, and found that I liked it, so I tried out for the team in 7th grade and didn't make it. The news was devastating when I learned that my dream had been crushed. So, I joined the cross country team that year and consoled myself by saying that I would make the team the next year. When I finally succeeded, I was ecstatic.
  • I earned my Eagle Scout Award

I earned my Eagle Scout Award
Getting my Eagle Scout Award has been one of the proudest moments in my life. I had been working hard for about 3 years on getting all the requirements for it and I was extremely relieved when it was over. While I was working on it I didn't realize how great an accomplishment it was until I was done and it became such a huge deal. I also couldn't get my drivers license until it was completed.
  • My 16th Birthday

    My 16th Birthday
My 16th Birthday is also another major event in my life. Getting my license is a big part of that because it provides freedom and an opportunity to do things that I couldn't do otherwise. I also got to go to my first prom which was a lot of fun.
