Meyer v. Nebraska
THis lead to " extended the
protection of the Constitution to everyday speech and prohibited coercive language restriction
on the part of states" (Rico-Diaz, p. 118, para. 1) -
Bilingual instruction eradicated
All of the 30's bought about the eradication of bilingual instruction in US schools due to the unconstitutional earlier treatment. -
Rebirth of bilingual education
Coral Way Elementary School opened up to both English and Spanish speaking students also seeking fluency and literacy in both languages. -
Lau vs Nicholas
THe ruling by the Supreme Court rendered " “There
is no equality of treatment merely by providing students with the same facilities, textbooks,
teachers, and curriculum, for students who do not understand English are effectively fore-
closed from any meaningful education”. (as cited in Rico-Diaz, p. 118, para. 6) -
Plyler vs. Doe
The US has gone from considering the Cherokee language to denying education in their own schools utilizing their own language to now allowing children of illegal immigrants to be educated lawfully. -
NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND
And... this includes English Language Learners. Federal funding is available to support schools in
educating English learners. (Rico-Diaz, 2012, p. 122) The Educational system has come full circle
