    Coral Way Elementary School
    The Cuban Revolution caused a large amount of Cuban immigrant children to arrive in Miami. In response to this Coral Way Elementary School was created. This school focused on teaching children in their primary language, Spanish. This was the first bilingual-bicultural school of it's kind in the U.S.
  • The Elementary and Secondary Educational Act

    The Elementary and Secondary Educational Act
    This national education law provides state run programs with a goal of providing equal opportunites to all students. These state run programs aim to assist struggling, poverty stricken, or disabled students equal opportunites to learn and succeed in the educational environment.
  • The Indian Education Act

    The Indian Education Act
    The Indian Education Act was established to help create a comprehensive approach to assist in meeting the unique needs of American Indian and Alask Native students. In 1969 an investigative report was released that showed how the current education system was failing these students. The act was signed into law in response to the results of that report.
  • Case of Lau vs. Nichols

    Case of Lau vs. Nichols
    This case was taken to trial and received national attention. The case was started due to the failure of the San Francisco school system to provide equal opportunities, including English language instrcution to over 1800 children of Chinese ancestry. In the case it was found that in not doing so the school system was not allowing euqal learning opportunites to all students.
  • Tribally Controlled Community College Assistance Act

    Tribally Controlled Community College Assistance Act
    This legislation authorized additional Federal assistance to community colleges controlled by American Indians on their reservations. "The Longest Walk" brought attention to the special and unique needs of Indian communities including their need to have secondary education funding that allows them to stay close to their tribal communities.

    The Refugee Act of 1980
    This act was created to provide effective resettlement of refugees and to assit them in achieving economic self-sufficiency. This act also helped to ensure that refugee children were provided the proper assitance to ensure that they were given equal education rights and to make sure that their unique need were acknowledged.
  • Plyer vs. Doe

    Plyer vs. Doe
    This case led to a Texas statue that withheld any state funds that were directed towards children who were not legally admitted to the United States being found to violate the Equal Protection clause of the fournteenth amednment. It was found that such discrimination could not be found rational.
  • Columbia College Begins Admitting Women

    Columbia College Begins Admitting Women
    Columbia College became the last Ivy-league school to begin fully admitting women for undergraduate degrees. This became an importnant event signifying the cultural value change in equal education for both seses. The school was worried that their applications would drop off due to this decision, bu7t instead the number of applications recieved more than doubled.
  • Sheff vs. O'Neil

    Sheff vs. O'Neil
    This case pinted out that the state was not holding true to The Conneticut Constitution and Statues which stated that all school aged children are entitled to equal educational opportunities. This case pointed out that poverty striken and minority students were being negelected, and called for the Connecticut educational system to ensure equal educational opportunities to all students.
  • Improving America's Schools Act

    Improving America's Schools Act
    President Clinton signed this act into effect that reauthorized a law that provided $11 billion in funding that assists programs designed for disadvanatged children in the education system. These programs aimed to assist at risk, negelgted, and delinquent children were to help increase scores and provide equal educational opportunities to these at risk youth.
