    Project Head Start
    The first program that provides an early childhood education that includes health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. This program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services was apart of the "War on Poverty" to allow children of low income families to have a proper chance and ability to develop their cognitive skills.
  • Marland Report to Congress

    Marland Report to Congress
    This is the first national report on gifted education in the United States of America. This allowed an increased effort to provide instructional and out-of-school provisions for gifted children in America.
  • Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

    Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
    This federal law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Feminists pushed for sex to be added to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but was rejected. Therefore, a new Title was created to focus primarily on the sex of an individual. Title IX is best known for its impact on high school and collegiate athletics.
  • The Tribally Controlled Community College Act

    The Tribally Controlled Community College Act
    This act was signed by President Jimmy Carter that allowed more federal funded assistance to community colleges controlled by American Indians on Reservations. This allowed Native Americans to expand educational opportunities for Indian students and allow for the improvement and expansion of the physical resources for higher education.
  • Board of Education v. Pico

     Board of Education v. Pico
    U.S. Supreme court rules that books cannot be removed from a school library because school administrators or teachers deemed their content to be offensive. The holding was that the 1st Amendment limits the power of local school boards to remove library books from junior high schools and high schools. This allows students more freedom to seek and discover their own opinions and mindsets without the persuasion of the school board.
  • Emergency Immigrant Education Act

    Emergency Immigrant Education Act
    This act provided funds to states to offset the costs of providing additional supplemental instructions to schools that had a high amount of immigration students. This allowed state education agencies and local education agencies to provide these educational services to the students who needed them.
  • Milwaukee Parental Choice Program

    Milwaukee Parental Choice Program
    This is considered the nation’s first modern private school choice program. It allows qualified students the opportunity to study at a private sectarian and nonsectarian school located in the city of Milwaukee, at no charge. This provides more students the opportunity to expand upon their education when they wouldn't have been able to afford it.
  • Massachusetts Education Reform Act

    Massachusetts Education Reform Act
    The reform act required the state to have a common curriculum amongst the schools as well as statewide exams. This paved way for other states in the US to do the exact same. Now all states have their own statewide exam to test the educational skills of its students. These statewide exams provide students feedback to how well they are doing in school compared to other students their own age.
  • Improving America's Schools Act

    Improving America's Schools Act
    This act, signed by President Bill Clinton, increased funding for bilingual and immigrant education. In addition to this, it made new provisions for public charter schools, raised awareness for drop-out prevention, and introduced new educational technology. By doing this, this act provided more supplemental supplies for immigrated students which allowed them the equal opportunity to learn with their peers.
  • 1998 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act

    1998 Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act
    This requires institutions and schools to produce report cards about teaching education and how teachers are as educators to children. By doing so, hopefully educators become more accountable for providing equitable learning environments for students.
