First Bilingual and Bicultural Public School

After the Cuban Revolution, Cuban children were flooding into the into the United States. In Miami, Coral Way Elementary opened the first bilingual and bicultural public school in the country.

Civil Rights Act

Civil Rights Act becomes law, which translates to more rights for minority students.

Project Head Start

Jan 1, 1965

An 8 week summer program for children in low-income families. It was during the summer.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act

This act provided financial aid to students in need. Stemming from this was programs that focused on bilingual education.

Immigration Act of 1965

Allowing more people to immigrate to the United States resulted in a more diverse American classroom.

This act gave more financial aid and scholarships for college and university students. This helped students in low income minority families have greater access into higher education.

This act was to provide funding to schools to provide assistance to students learning English.

McCarver Elementary School

The first magnet school, which allowed students to come from anywhere in the city of Tacoma rather than into the court ordered zones previously instated. This lead to mixing of races and breaking segregation.

Indian Education Act

This act established a focus to meeting the needs of Native American children.

Supreme court rules that English language must be taught to Chinese-American students who can not fluently speak english.
