First Free school
In 1635 the first free school was opened in Verginia. This wasnt the frist attempt at establishing a education system. It was also odd for it to open in Verginia because it was custom in the southern colonies that kids be tought by their parents.(dont know exact date) -
Required Education
On April 14th 1642 the Massachusetts Bay School Law was passed. It stated that children had to be taught the basics of religion and laws. -
First English Academy
in 1751 Benjamin Franklin helped establish the first English Academy in Philadelphia. It has many courses including history and navigation and eventually went on to become the University of Philadelphia.

Two Track Education
In 1779 Thomas Jefferson came up with the idea of having a two track education system for "the laboring and the learned." He stated that there would be a track for labor and a track for learning so kids could get more specific into what they will be doing. (dont know exact date) -

Elizabeth Blackwell is the first women to graduate from medical school. She attended Geneva Medical College and after became a pioneer for the education of women in medicine. -
