Title IX
Title IX protects people from discrimination based on sex in educatino programs or activities that receive Federal financial assistance. Title IX impacted multicultural education because it allowed women to receive the same educational benefits that men received, i.e., recruitement, admissions and counseling, athletics, employment, etc. -
American Indian Educational Act
Legislation that established a comprehensive approach to meeting the unique needs of American Indian and Alaska Native Students. This impacts multicultural education because it is the only legislation that deals with American Indian education from pre-school through graduate-level education and reflect the diversity of government involvement in Indian education. -
Garrity Busing Ruling
Federal Judge Arthur Garrity ordered the busing of African American students to predominantly white schools to achieve racial integrations of public schools in Boston. This impacted multicultural education because the ruling desegretated the public schools in Boston. -
Equal Educational Opportunities Act
Law passed by Congress in 1974 that championed the rights of all children to have equal educational opportunities This impacted multicultural education because it forced school districts to take action to overcome hurdles to students' equal participation. -
Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA)
IDEA ensures students with disabilities to Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is tailored to their needs. This impacted multicultural education because it allowed students with disabilities to receive the same type of education as those students who do not have a disability. -
Immigration and Nationality Act of 1990
Law that was passed in 1990 to allow 700,000 immigrants to come to the United States which adds to the diversity of our nation. This impacts multicultural education because adding more diversity to our country adds more diversity to our schools. -
No Child Left Behind Act
Signed into law by George W. Bush in 2002, updating the ESEA of 1965. Due to concern that the American education system was no longer internationally competitive, this law increased the feds role in holding schools responsible for the academic progress of all students. This impacted multicultural education because it put focus on student groups such as English-language learners, students in special education, and poor and minority children whose achievement trails their peers.
