    Knowledge of the human body greatly increased. Established the use of ligatures to stop excessive bleeding. Apothecaries made prescribed and sold medicine. In 1670 the microscope was invented. the average life span was 35-45 years.

    Gabriel Fahrenheit created the first mercury thermometer in 1686. Benjamin Franklin made bifocals in 1760. John Hunter established surgical procedures, introducing tube feeding. Average life span is now 40-50 years.

    There were rapid advancements due to discoveries in vaccinations, anesthesia, and microorganisms. In 1895 the X-ray was developed. The first open heart surgery was preformed in 1893. In 1816 was the invention of the stethoscope. Formal training for nurses began in 1860. Average life span was 40-60 years.

    1901 ABO blood groups were created. Insulin and antibiotics were created 1922-28. New machines were developed such as the Kidney Dialysis in 1943 and the Heart Lung in 1953. The structure of DNA was in 1953. In 1956 was when the first bone marrow transplant was preformed. The first test tube babies was in 1978. The following organ transplants were preformed in 1960-1982: kidney, liver, heart, artificial heart.
