By 1825 there were only around 100 magazines. By 1885 there were 3,300 of them. Before the war publishers or the people who owned them had to pay out of pocket for the magazines. -
Motion pictures
The first film that came out was in 1904. In 1922 there were 40 million people weekly watching a movie. BY 1940 it was 90 million. -
Radio
The first radio station was in Pittsburg around 1920. They brought a competitive threat to magazines. By 1940 40 million households had radios. -
Computers
Computers began in the 1940s in government agencies and universities. There were 33 magazines on computers by 1980. Readers interest started to fall back because of television which hurt computers and magazines. -
Television and video
The television networks began in 1949. When the cost decreased for television they went up by 97 percent. Magazines started to fail and blamed it on televisions. -
The internet
The internet came along with its partner the computer. The internet benefited the magazine industry in different ways. By 2000 there 2 billion dollars in advertising revenue on the internet.
