He founded the American Federation of Labor. Gompers was a labor leader and a key figure in American labor history. -
Haymarket Riot
This Haymarket riot was just a protest until someone threw a bomb at police and killed eight people. Eight radical labor activists were convicted in connections to the bombing. -
Shirtwaist Factory Fire
This fire happened in a t shirt factory within a unsafe working environment. It happened in New York City when a fire started in a bin of cotton scraps. The fire escape collapsed. Within eighteen minutes, 144 workers died from the flames or from jumping out of the seventh story windows. -
General Motors Sit Down Strike
This strike changed the United Automobile Workers from a collection of isolated individuals into a major union. This led to unionization of the United States Automobile industry. -
The Wagner Act
The Wagner Act was also known as The National Labor Relations Act. It established defined unjust labor practices, secured workers the right to bargain collectively, and established The National Labor Relations Board. -
Fair Labor Standards Act
This act established a forty hour work week. It also regulated child labor and set standards for minimum wage and overtime pay. -
Taft-Hartley Act
This act restricts the activities and power of labor unions. It established several unfair labor practices unions are prohibited from engaging in.
