  • 1800 BCE

    1800's- Bacterial Period of Public Health

    Louis Pasteur Germ theory of disease. In 1849 John Snow discovered that a water pump was spreading cholera. Joseph Lister came up with the antiseptic method.
  • Period: 1700 BCE to 1700 BCE

    Age of Enlightenment

    Disease and plagues still raged. Growth in cities. Miasma theory was created. They thought disease was caused by the filth on the streets that people breathed in.
  • Period: 1500 BCE to 1700 BCE

    Renaissance

    Beginning of change. Disease was still rampant. Barbers performed surgery and dentistry. Printing press was invented as well as the microscope.
  • 1400 BCE

    Leprosy

    Bacterial infection, facial and extremity disfigurement. Highly contagious.
  • 1347 BCE

    Bubonic Plague

    Killed one/third of Europe's population from 1347-1352. Caused by fleas that landed on people.
  • 500 BCE

    Ancient Greece

    First to emphasize prevention of disease. Role of physicians were more scientific and less religion.

    Romans

    Romans aqueducts bring water to people. Rowan baths are created: public and private baths. Extensive underground sewers that emptied in the Tibet River.
  • Period: 500 BCE to 1500 BCE

    The Middle Ages

    Over crowding led to animals and people sharing the same space. No emphasis on cleanliness. Disease was caused by sin.
  • Period: 460 BCE to 377 BCE

    Hippocrates

    Moved health away from religion. Disease was a result of an imbalance. Father of modern medicine.
