    This was the first Family and Consumer Science textbook recognized by the Department of Education. The author of this textbook, as well as 33 others, was Catherine Beecher.
  • Rumford Kitchen

    Rumford Kitchen
    The Rumford Kitchen was founded. It was named after Benjamin Thompson (Count Rumford).
  • Morrill Act

    This is also known as the Land Grant Act. This act provides federal land to states so they can finance colleges specializing in agriculture and mechanical arts. The universities that benefit from this act are called Land Grant Universities. In Arkansas the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff are land grant universities.

    Eleven people attended a conference in Lake Placid, New York. Here, the new field of study was named Home Economics.

    American Home Economic Association
    The American Home Economic Association was founded. Ellen Richards founded the association and was also the first president.

    This established a system of Cooperative Extension Services, including Family and Consumer Science.

    The American Dietetic Assocation was founded. Lulu C. Graves was the first president.

    Future Homemakers of America
    The Future homemakers of America was founded. Today this is known as FCCLA.
  • Vocational Education Act

    This act provides funding to states to maintain, improve, and develop their vocational education programs.
  • Vocational Admendement

    This admendment is added to the Vocational Education act. It address the nations economic issues. It also continued funding for students who are at risk or students who have a disability.

    This amendment worked to extend, maintain, improve, and develop vocational education programs. It also worked to overcome sex discrimination.

    The American Home Economics Association changed the name of the profession to Family and Consumer Sciences
