History of Families and Family Resource Management

    Adam and Eve

    In Christianity, we see the idea of family being introduced in the beginning of time, with Adam and Eve. Eve was created as Adams wife, we see the concept of marrage, and they continue on to have children, starting a family.
  • Beginning of America

    When America was first founded, the ideal family consisted of a mom, dad, and biological children. At this point, slaves were legal but not considered part of the family. It was expected for everyone to get married and to stay married until death. The men were the head of the household, wifes had no legal identity and were expected to take care of the home.
  • Married Women’s Property Acts

    In the beggining of the 19th century women started to gain more rights,they were able to sue and get sued, own property, and more, however their husbands were still the head of household and theur role was still primarily in the home.
  • A happier household

    During the 19th century the government stepped in and inproved a lot within schools and the home. Changes were made to improve childrens lives, and the idea of marrage shifted. The shift in ideas of marrage lead poeple to marry for love and for people to really have a choice in who they were wedding. This change lead to a spike in divorce rate which continues until 1910
  • Ellen Swallow Richards

    Ellen was the first women to attend MIT, she then had a role in starting the school lunch program, and started Home Economics. She was interested in the science behind running a home.
  • The Great Depression.

    The war was a hard time for fmailies. Men went off leaving the women to run the household completely, takin gon the role of making money as well. The divorce rate dropped because it was expencive, children were having to get jobs, and because of a lack of stability in these kids lives there was a high rate of juvenile delinquency.
  • The ideal family

    The 1950s are a time where the "cookie cutter family" was at its height. The idea of a father that provided financially for the family and a mother who took care of the home with the perfect 2.5 kids was on everyones minds.
  • Becoming more progressive

    In the 1960s women started to become more staple in a home, stating to have their own careers and live on their own. In 1969 the state of California became the first to adopt the no-fault divorce.
  • Family Resource Management

    In the 70s the study of family resource management emerged. This taught people about how to use their money, time, and recorces.
  • The Modern Family

    The past several decades have made strides in creating equality withoin the household. Expections that were once held over everyones heads are gone, you can marry who you want to marry, have the job you want to have, and get the education you desire. In 2015 same sex marriage became legal, solidifying the progess being made.
