    The year of the Norman-French conquest of England. The Germany Tribes from Europe who overrun England in the 5th century after the Roman withdraw brought with the old English, or Anglo-Saxon English, which is the basis of modern English.

    The middle period was a time of rapid development of the language. For the first 3 centuries, English was the only spoken language, and such had form and could develop without any restrain all the element of the language changed fundamentally.

    The renaissance no hit England until nearly the 16th century when the Tudor family come the power. Henry VII and later heirs including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, become major supporters of humanist ideas and brought scholar from across Europe.
    England also produced great renaissance and humanist thinker such as Thomas More and author and play writes such Willian Shakespeare who set many of his play in the classical period.

    Essentially all literature from the time period focus of the connection between God and people’s everyday lives.
    Mostly wrote diaries, histories, and sermons although we will also to read puritan poetry. Usually wrote in a more plain style, although the sermon we will read uses many rhetorical devices, to make a stronger impact.

    The period after Shakespeare lived was called “the restoration” in England because it marked the restoration of King Charles II to the throne, and the reopening of the theaters that had been closed by the puritans.
    The restoration was a time when wealthy lords and ladies enjoyed lavish lifestyle and elaborate fashion.
    Theater now move indoor to attract this elite, stared to cater to this audience.

    The development of the literature in this period can be summarized as: neoclassical poetry and prose in the early decades of the 18th century; the rise and flourish of modern realistic novel in the middle years of the 18th century; and the appearance of gothic novel and the sentimental and pre-romantic poetry and fiction in the last few decades of the 18th century.

    The Victorian era is characterized by English imperialism. England was rapidly expanding. Queen Victorian was named Empress of Indian.
    The Victorian era is also thought to be a time of rigid and repressed sexuality. Reading became a new past time because same theatre was regarded as immoral. Homosexual behavior was regarded as a criminal offense and several writers were sentenced to hard labor engaging in homosexual activities.

    The modern age in English Literature started from the beginning of the twenty century, and it followed the Victorian Age. The most important characteristic of Modern Literature is that it is opposed to the general attitude to life and its problems adopted by the Victorian writers and the public, which may be termed “Victorian”.

    Post Modern Literature is characterized by heavy reliance on techniques such as fragmentation, paradox, and questionable narrators, and is often (though not exclusively) defined as a style or trend which emerged in the post-world war ll era.
    Postmodern Literature is seen as reaction against Enlightenment thinking and modernist approaches to literature.

    Is literature with is setting generally after World War II. Include contemporary romance. It is a subgenre of romance novel, generally with the setting after World War II. The largest of the romance novel subgenres, contemporary romance novel are set in the time when they were written, and usually reflect the mores of their time.
