The First College
The first college opened in1638 at Harvard University. -
U.S. is the best
In the 1840's primary school became very popular and the citizens of the U.S. became most educated in the world. -
The First Textbook
William Holmes McGuffey was asked to write a school text book. McGuffey had published his first reader in 1841. The child modeled in this book is prompt, good, kind, honest and truthful. This first book contained fifty-five lessons. -
Public School Transportation
All states by 1919 had laws to provide funds for transporting children to school. -
SAT
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) was first administered in 1926. The ACT came along in 1959. -
A School District
Starting in 1930 there became school districts and they got money from taxes. -
Separation of levels
Elementary and high schools were no longer held in the same building. -
Teacher's get a salary
The first request for teachers to receive a salary was requested and approved. -
the Elementary and Secondary Act
In 1965, the Elementary and Secondary Act was passed by Congress to help disadvantaged children achieve higher standards in education. Bilingual education programs were added to many schools. -
No more discrimination
On November 15, 1996 California passed Proposition 209 which stated that public schools cannot discriminate aginst another race, sex, or ethnicity. -
No Child Left Behind Law
In 2002, the United States entered its current era of education accountability/reform with the institution of the No Child Left Behind law. This law has changed the U.S. because now schools must give students statewide math and reading tests every year in grades 3–8 and once in grades 10–12.
