Education in the Colonial period
One of the first school started was in 1683, in Pennsylvania among the Quaker communities. -
Common Schools
The common place schools were established in the 1830's, they were a system of schools proposed by Horace Mann.The common place schools were the precursor to today's public elementary schools. Some of the important changes that came with the common place schools was; proposed free universal non-sectarian schooling, for all children regardless of religion or social class, funded by taxes and special fees paid by parents, compulsory attendance laws. -
Impact of Horace Mann
The most important event.
Horace Mann was important for reform in the schooling system. Mann was unsatisfied with his own schooling as a child and so in 1837 when the first ever board of education was formed in Massachusetts and Mann was made secretary, this began a period called the common school movement. It began in the 1930's, where a better, tax funded, secular school system was established. This event was the beginning of reform and still impacts us today. -
The measurement movement
Alfred Binet started the movement in 1905. -
The secondary school movement
Important Event.
The main idea for this was that a form of education that prepared the masses and their children to win a portion of the nation's wealth and mount the socio-economic ladder as high as possible was needed. This is still in place today but we still debate about what the reason for education for the masses is. -
The progressive reform movement
The Progressive Era was a period of widespread social activism and political reform across the United States, from the 1890s to 1920s. The main objective of the Progressive movement was eliminating corruption in government. -
The impact of John Dewey
Important event.
In the 1920's / 1930's, John Dewey became famous for pointing out that the authoritarian, strict, pre-ordained knowledge approach of modern traditional education was too concerned with delivering knowledge, and not enough with understanding students' actual experiences. This is important because this is the basis of what we try to reach still today. -
The impact of WW2
Many schools at this time had to be closed or were shared with evacuees. This time period postponed reform for the education system. -
Brown Vs. Board for education
This was about the segregation of public schools on the basis of race. -
Elementary and secondary education act
This was the most expansive federal education bill ever passed. -
The committee of ten
The committee of ten were a group of individuals that recommended standardising american high schools. -
Individuals with disabilities in education act
Important Event.
IDEA was originally enacted by Congress in 1975 to ensure that children with disabilities have the opportunity to receive a free appropriate public education, just like other children. This still impacts us today for sure we we reach for better ways to understand and aid those individuals with disabilities. -
The standards Movement
This movement was based off the lack of rigor in the education system and they set out to reform it. -
The growth of standardized testing

No child left behind act
Important Event.
The Act required states to develop assessments in basic skills. To receive federal school funding, states had to give these assessments to all students at select grade levels. This is the goal that everyone is focusing on now, so this definitely still impacts us now and will be our focus for sometime.
