History of Education

  • Education Law of 1647

    The Law ordered every township of 50 people to provide a teacher to teach reading and writing and townships of 100+ had to set up a grammer school.

    Noah Webster He wrote a textbook "Elementary Spelling Book" (often referred to as the blue-back speller), he also wrote "American Dictionary of English Language. He is credited for initiating the Common School Movement. He believed we needed to be truly American we had to get rid of the European influence and in turn he influenced the way we speak and spell words. He also supported the concept of free schools.

    Population Growth & Immigration

    Everyone immigrating to America and when they arrived here they started living in more urban areas instead of rural areas. The urban areas began to grow rapidly and with that there were children that needed to be educated. We had to learn and adapt to teach that many children at once.

    Common School Movement

    This is what started to shape our educational system. This movement was the product of a variety of economic, social and political factors. Common schools were seen by the working class as a way to move upward both socially and ecomonically.
  • Horace Mann-IMPORTANT

    Horace Mann-IMPORTANT
    Horace MannConsidered the "Father of American Education", he was the first secretary of education. He took it upon himself to review the school facilities and wrote extensive notes about each one he visited. He is quoted as saying something along the lines of "The American people take better care of their livestock then they do their children's education." In his notes he standardized everything about school, how the classroom should be set up to what should be taught, this is how he reached the masses.
  • Committee of Ten

    Put together by the National Education Association (NEA) to standardize high school curriculum. Recommended 8 years of elementary education and 4 years of secondary education. Came up with 4 curricula: classical, Latin-scientific, modern language & English.

    John DeweyHe was the "Father of Progressive Education". Belived in learning by doing. Believed that if we geared teaching toward teh whole child then school would be different, teaching would be differnt and learning would be different. I feel like this is more of the way we are moving with education now. Involving all learning aspects of the children.
  • The Measurement Movement/Lewis Terman

    Lewis Terman developed an IQ test that was a number indicating the level of an individuals mental development. It was used by the military during WWI to decide if soliders were able to perform in the war. After the was it because a permanent fixture in the school system.
  • Impact of World War II

    The war took teachers out of the classroom because they went out to the battlefield, The war also impacted enrollment because children felt like they could do more for the war effort by working. Financial support was also cut so the majority of funds could support the war. I feel like this almost caused a shut down of our school system, even if it was for a short time.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    This lawsuit ruled that segregated educational facilities have no place in publi education and generate a feeling of inferiority that affects a child's motivation to learn. This was just the beginning of the civil rights revolution.

    Sputnik and NDEA

    The launch of Sputnik killed the Progressive Movement because it was thought that more emphasis needed to be put on math and science. NDEA (National Defense Education Act) directed significant federal funding to specific curricular areas, math, science & modern foreign languages. It was the first time the federal government attempted to influence the curriculum.

    War On PovertyThe War on Poverty was part of Lyndon Johnson's State of the Union, he believed that education was a major factor in eliminating poverty. He also started the Head Start program which was to help children from low income family be prepared to enter into the public school system no behind.
  • IDEA: Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act

    Before this act people with disabilities were isolated and hidden usually in state institutions. The act made it possible to bring these amazing people out of hiding and become a part of society. These kids got to interact with other kids their age in a school setting. The get to be treated as a normal kid.
  • School Choice Movement

    President Ronald Reagan talked about how our schools systems had become "lazy". By giving parents a choice as to which schools their children could attend created competition between schools and pushed them to be better to attract students. Before now you went to the school based on your home address and that was your only choice, now you could choose.
  • No Child Left Behind Act-IMPORTANT

    No Child Left Behind ActThis act brought together curriculum across the nation. It was mostly directed at title 1 schools, but there is no way to impliment or enforce something in one school of a district and not in the others, so all schools in the districts implimented the requirements. There are standards which every student should know and learn in math and reading.
