    Boston Latin School
    The Boston Latin School was the first public school in America. This school was established in Boston, Massachusetts. This was a boys only school led by a Puritan settler, Philemon Pormont. Some of the well known alumni from this school are John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Benjamin Franklin had dropped out.
  • Georgia Female college

    Georgia Female college
    Now known as Wesleyan College, Georgia Female College was the first college for females in Macon, Georgia. The college was founded by a group of Macon citizens and the Georgia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    Oliver Brown's case and 5 other cases involving problems in segregation went forward to the Supreme Court. The court disputed if the ruling of Plessy v Ferguson applied, but it was ruled that the “separate but equal” act was unconstitutional and that it deprived students of “equal” protection. Therefore, Brown v Board made it mandatory to desegregate schools.

    Sputnik
    In 1957, the Russian satellite Sputnik had led to a revolution in U.S. Science Education. This event was catastrophic to the space race between the U.S. and the Soviets. The Americans then proceeded to increase funds into updated lab kits, projectors and educational films. to execute the importance of science education.

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
    President Lyndon B. Johnson had signed the ESEA after he urged the country to “declare a national goal of full educational opportunity.” This act provided more resources and new grants to districts serving low-income students.
  • Title IX

    Title IX
    On June 23 of 1972, Title IX was passed by Congress. Title IX prohibits the discrimination on sex in education programs and activities operated by recipients of federal financial assistance. This allowed women more equal opportunities in education and activities.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    President Gerald Ford had passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act in 1975 that is now known as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. This act makes free appropriate public education available to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children.

    A Nation at Risk Report
    Ronald Reagan had reported "A Nation at Risk" in April of 1983. This report included how to improve public schools. This included the addition of state and local tests to measure the improvements of the school. It also included the need of curriculum changes and importance of art and computer science.

  • No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB)
    President George W. Busch put the No Child Left Behind Act in the activation to provide equal educational opportunities for disadvantaged students. This was a version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act and was in effect from 2002-2015 before being replaced with the Every Student Succeeds Act.
  • Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

    Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
    The Every Student Succeeds Act was installed by President Barack Obama in 2015. This act had reauthorized the ESEA that was made 50 years prior. This new law focuses on preparing students for their future goals in college and careers. This Act replaced the NCLBA and ensures the success of students and their schools.
