The American Early National Period (1776-1840)
• Most children grew up on farms or small towns and expected their life to be much like their parents
’• Benjamin Franklin worked to expand educational opportunities, he started a secondary school, or academy, in Philadelphia that offered a board range of subjects, including practical ones
• Thomas Jefferson believed that education was the key of making a newly formed democracy, if common people were well educated and took part of a democratic government, then it would thrive -
The American Common School Period (1840-1880)
• At the begginign of the common school period, the country was still primarily rural. Most children were taught at home or in small country school houses where one teacher taught all grades. Teachers in these schools were paid by by community members
.• Horace Mann, the father of education, served as th first secretary of the state board of education, wich made an impact on education national. He worked hard to establish free public education for every boy and girl, also advanced schools. -
The American Progressive Period (1880-1921)
• During the American Progressive Period schools were highly segregated, colored children recieved poor education than white children.
• John Dewey, an educational philosopher, psychologist, and writer was a leading voice for progressive education at that time. He promoted the link between learning and experience, stating that students learn best through real life activities that linked new information to previous experiences -
The 1920's and the Great Dpression Era (1921-1940
• During the Great Depression in 1930s, public schools faced a storage of cash since many citizens were unable to pay their taxes
• During the Great Depression, the situation for schools was bleak, since their was no money, some district cut the school year in half or ceased to opperate in the sittuation.
