  • First Public School in America

    The first public school, known as the Boston Latin School, was established. It was a boys-only public school and was only used for college preparation.

  • Harvard University

    Harvard was the first established institution for higher education. It is established in Newtowne, but is what we now know as Cambridge, Massachusetts.

  • Bill of Rights

    In the Bill of Rights, there is nothing mentioned about education. However, the 10th Amendment states that laws not written in for the federal government are delegated to the states. Therefore, the educational rights are given to the state government, not the federal government.

  • Common Schools

    Common Schools
    Horace Mann was the one who started the common school movement in the mid-1800's. He advocated for common schools which are public schools for anyone no matter their wealth, or class in society.
  • National Teachers Association (National Education Association)

    The National Teachers Association, now known as the National Education Association, is an association that started as one hundred teachers that came together to argue for public education. 150 years later, public education has changed.

  • Baby Boom Period

    After WWII ends, the population of America increased drastically. Because of the incline of population, the higher the demand got for educators and bigger school houses. Education began to be taken more seriously, and the percentage of American people that got an education increased.

  • McCollum V. Board of Education

    McCollum V. Board of Education
    This Supreme Court case is the case when the Supreme Court ruled that public schools cannot allow time for students to practice religious activities during school. This case is testing and showing an argument for the practice of separation of church and state.
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    Brown v. Board of Education is a huge deal when talking about the history of education. In this case, the judges unanimously voted to stop segregating in schools because it was deemed unconstitutional. This case helped fuel the fire for the Civil Rights Movement. Although schools were not completely unsegregated, it started the Separate but Equal movement which was then shut down.

  • The Soviet Union Launches Sputnik

    The Soviet Union Launches Sputnik
    Sputnik being launched in 1957 was a major event dealing with not only education, but the American Society as a whole. Sputnik started the Space Race which in turn, all caused the expansion of math and science education in America.
  • The No Child Left Behind Act

    The focus behind this act is to make sure that there are no gaps in the education process for any children. It was set to ensure that all children are open to an equal and fair opportunity of receiving a good quality of higher-education.
