    Massachusetts Passes First Ever Education Law

    Native American Boarding Schools
    Native American boarding schools were created for the purpose of assimilating native americans into the "white men ways." The most famous ones were created by Col. Richard Henry Pratt.
  • First "Colored" School Building

    First "Colored" School Building
    The first African American school building opened in Winter Park in 1890. Though this allowed for African American children to recieve an education it was under harsh circumstances with very little resources.
  • Progressive Era Education

    Progressive Era Education
    The progressive era brought about more schools. With more schools available, more students were getting an eduction. In fact, by 1940 50% of adults and young adults had recieved a high school diploma. The educational leader during this era was John Dewey. This is a photo of him.
  • Mendez v. Westminster

    This supreme court case made it illegal for schools to segregate Mexican student in Orange County, California. It ruled "Mexican schools" unconstitutional and ordered desegregation.

  • National Defense Education Act

    National Defense Education Act
    The act was passed during The Cold War to provide grants and loans to higher education students. These grants and loans were specifically for students studying Math, Science, and Foreign Language. The goal was to push more students to study these areas to increase our military and technological strength compared to other nations. During this time students also did duck and cover drills incase of a bomb being dropped. This is a picture of one of those drills.

    LGBTQ Education

  • College for Women

    College for Women
    By 1970 most state colleges and university were no longer sex segregated. By this time there were also co-ed and sex specific colleges. However they could only study things such as nursing and teaching.
  • Education in the 21st Century

    A teacher's role in the classroom is to connect information being taught to real world applications. The 21st century has also focused on the importance of environmental studies as well as green education. Students must learn to be aware of their surroundings.     Teacher Education
    The U.S. Department of Education is proposing many plans to imporved Teacher Education. They want teachers to be able to see and train in high-demand areas and also be able to connect with teachers and other teaching students for help and advice. These proposals would also hold programs accountable for how well they are training education students.
