Public schools began offering education beyond elementary school. This would give many people the opportunity for "practical education". At the beginning, these schools were only open to males. After the school's success, another one was opened for girls.

Philosopher, educator, and avid supporter of social change and reforming education. Dewey was a leader in the progressive movement in education. He wanted to see education be more than just academics alone.

The Measurement Movement
Measuring one's intelligence. IQ tests became significant. -
Brown vs. The Board of Education
A Supreme Court case which ruled in public school segregation being unconstitutional. Brown was a black father who wanted his daughter to have equal opportunity for a quality education. This event helped establish the idea that "separate, but equal" was not truth. This ruling resulted in many riots and many black students were threatened.

NDEA
Provided funding to improve schools and promote college education. -

Provided funding for lower income schools to receive a more quality education. -

A nationwide law that ensures students with disabilities have services and assistance. -
The Standards Movement
A result of "A Nation at Risk". With this movement, higher standards were set in schools with a more rigorous curriculum. -
A Nation at Risk Report

The School Choice
Allows public education funds to be used at schools or for services that best fit the needs of the student. -
No Child Left Behind Act
Expanded the role of standardized testing. Government's goal was to guarantee quality education to all US children.
