  • Education in Colonial Period

    This period was the introduction to the first Kindergarten.
  • Secondary School Movement

    Occurred much later than the common school movement. High school for boys became a success and so was pushed to start a high school for girls.

    The Impact of Horace Mann
    Horace Mann was made the first Secretary of Board of Education. He was determined to change the way the school system was set up. Took the time to travel to all schools to see the state of the public schools.   • Common Schools

    Common Schools
    First free public schools in America. They were the first schools to be split into levels for different ages. They had a very strong Protestant influence. They were taught letters through the Protestant bible and memorized scripture and prayer.
    This still impacts the schools today since we still have schools and education is more important than ever!

    Progressive Reform Movement

    School started to become mandatory. The curriculum changed from subject-centered to child-centered. Children were taught not only formal education, but social, emotional, and physical education as well to help them become helpful parts of society.
    Learn by doing. Exercise body as well as mind. Field trips to learn.

    The committee was established to standardize curriculum throughout public schools. They chose the subjects to be covered and how many times a week the subject would be taught
  • Impact of John Dewey

    Impact of John Dewey
    Joh Dewey had a huge part in the movement from Class based curriculum to Child base curriculum. Introduced belief that classroom is not only for formal education, but also social, emotional, and physical education.
    Child based education is bigger now then it ever has been. The idea that all chidren are different started thanks to John Dewey.

    Impact of WWII

    Teachers had to drop out to fight in war. Students stopped coming to school so they could work to suppport families. Education funds were being used for war use. Colleges became a place to train soldiers in specialized training programs.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    Brown vs Board of Education
    US Court ruled that segregated education facilities should not be in public education and affects child’s motivation to learn. Not all states accepted the outcome up front, but slowly all schools turned to schools with all religions and races mixed in, including teachers. This started the Civil Rights revolution and the start to all rights for blacks and immigrants. Without this win, we may still have segrated schools today.

  • Sputnik and NDEA

    Sputnik - Put an end to Progressive education due to fact that USA was “behind” in science and math.
    NDEA - National Defense Education Act. Federal gov attempt to influence curriculum in schools. Wanted all new everything when it came to schools.

    Civil Rights Movement and War on Poverty

    All students could and would be taught equally no matter the race, color, gender, or national origin. Education was critical to win war on poverty because with an education, even the poorest children could get jobs and contribute to society
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Almost $1 Billion in federal funds given to education. Included native American children and limited English-speaking children.
  • Individuals with Disabilites in Education Act

    A law passed to ensure that a students receive a free appropriate education no matter the disabilities they may have.
  • A Nation at Risk Report

    A Nation at Risk Report
    The MOST IMPORTANT. Response to the idea that the education system was failing to meet national need of students. Required an assessment of the quality of teaching and learning that was going on throughout schools in the US. Completely changed again the way education was being taught and is the basis of our school system today. The commission released 38 recommendations for the school systems that ended up changing the course of education.

  • No Child Left Behind

    Standards that every child should know and learn in math and reading with annual tests to determine the progress being made. There would also be a report card sent out to parents to let them know if school is reaching the standards and qualifications stated.
