He was a surporter of the common school idea to make all schools equal and free. Now this is a firm belief of people in America. We still strive to provide a good education for free and we are continually trying to make that education better.

Schools were ordered to remove offensive material. Board of Education an elected body began. Beginning of diffusing religion from public. eduation. This is still affecting America today because we are continually seperating school and church.

    The Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Brown family. This made education something that all people had a right to on equal terms. Seperate buildings and segregation no longer are equal options.

    Sputnik and National Defense Education Act

    Sputnik was launced and America felt they were losing the Cold War. Reacting to public pressure,in 1958 the federal government passed the National Defense Education Act. By directing significant federal funding to specific curricular areas,
    particularly mathematics, science, and modern foreign languages, the federal government for the first time attempted to influence the curriculum in general elementary and secondary education.

    Civil Rights Act
    This Act officially made it illegal to discriminate against people based on the color of their skin, race, or national orgin. It allowed the gov. to withhold federal funds if schools didn't comply with this Act. It also gave schools money if they did try to desegregate. Now all American schools are desegregated and instead of striving to make everyone the same we respect differences and embrace them.

    I.D.E.AIndividuals with Disabilities in Education Act. This act made it possible for students with a disability to get an education in the least restrictive environment. Now almost all students with a disability get the chance to get an education something that prior to this point people didn't even imagine.

    A Nation at Risk Report
    The Nation calls for a reform in Education. This reform in education made the requirements for graduation a lot higher. More was expected of the students and new things were introuduced to the school. The school day and year both got longer.
