This was important because it set up a standard for education in America long before we were even an established country. The puritans were educated and wanted their children to be as well. They succeeded in passing on this legacy.
This still impacts us today as our culture is still very focused on education. This set up a precidence that government can pass education laws. -

The impact of Horace Mann (Most important)
Click here for more information!Horace Mann was the first secretary of education. He was a huge proponent of creating high quality "common schools."
Many common schools were in complete disreapair. The buildings were in horrible shape, textbooks were outdated, and schools the quality of schools were greatly varied. Mann sought high quality equality.
We can thank Horace Mann today for the high quality public education we enjoy. He made it his mission that all children could recieve a high quality education. -
The first legal case concerning integration and Sarah Roberts
Sarah Roberts application was denied to 5 schools because of her race, so her father sued. They won the case and segregation was banned in Massechusetts. -

In the early days of education, high school was not a requirement. Many students only attended "common school" or elementary school. This gave the funding necessary to begin the slide towards more students attending high school.
This impacts us today because we now have fully funded K-12 schools. -
The Impact of John Dewey
During the progressive era, John Dewey pushed for a more child-centered curriculum instead of the strict subject-centered curriculum. -
The Progressive Reform Movement
Click here for more information!Children were often found working in factories when they should have been in school. Safe, child-centered schools were pushed.
Children were not required to attend school, so many were not given the opportunity. The progressive reform movement gave children opportunities by enforcing school attendance. It has also made schools safer, more pleasant environments. -
Brown vs. Board of Education

Before this case, students were segregated, and it was very unequal. This case allowed black children to recieve a truly equal education as it brought down segregation. This still impacts us today as all children are able to recieve a quality education. -
NDEA
In reaction to the cold war, funding, training, and new curriculum were given to education. -
The Impact of the War on Poverty
1/4 of the population was in poverty, and Lyndon B. Johnson saw education as a way to change that. -
Elementary and Secondary Education Act
As part of the war on poverty, funding was given to schools. Title 1 schools were given funding for low income students. -

Students with disabilities are ensured the best and most appropriate education they can recieve. -
