History of Distance Education

  • The Beginning

    1840ish Isaac Pitman taught his pupils shorthand via correspondence. Pitman was the certified teacher who had assignments sent to him, he graded them and sent the grades back along with more assignments for his students.
  • First testing machine

    In 1924 a testing machine was invented that made it possible for students to test themselves.
  • First Computer Based

    In 1960 the first computer based training program was given. This CBT program was called PLATO-Programmed Logic for Automated Teaching Operations.
  • In the 70s

    Sometime during the 70s elearning went from delivering information to students to actually being more interactive.
  • In the 80s

    It was in the 80s that home computers were actually sold to be used in homes for personal use.
  • Early 90s

    It was around 1991 that Web1.0 was made available to everyone. This was the first version of the world wide internet.
  • Virtual Class

    First full online class with curriculm. Launched by Jones International University.
  • Online Blackboard

    The initial release of the Blackboard that we use for our online classes was released in 1997.
  • 2004-2007

    It was around 1999 that Web 2.0 was being thought up, around 2004 that ideas were being created, and around 2007 when Web 2.0 had made topic in the News Media around the world. This was not really an update of the internet but different softwares being used so that there could be interaction on most if not all web pages. Most possibilities.
  • Early 90s

    It was the early 90s when some schools were set up that were able to offer online courses for distance learning.
  • eLearning for companies

    In the 2000s companies started using eLearning to train their employees.
  • Present Day

    We are able to use Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Skype and Blackboard in order to keep in touch with classmates, professors and other school administrators. We are able to use devices such as smartphones, other handheld devices and laptops to easily keep in touch with the world around us so easily and from almost anywhere (as long as you have a signal on your device of course)
