1850-1900 (First Wave)
*The Professional Movement, this where professionals made the choices for the disabled.
*Most of the time they were kept in institutions.
*Treating them horrible and keeping them out of the community and most of the time forcing them to become sterile.
*Parent and members of the community found this to be okay and completely normal.
*People looked at them as a menace to society. -
1950-1980 (Second Wave)
The Parent Wave
*Parents didn't like the institutions and really hated how they were being treated.
*The parents wanted the child to be at home with them.
**This movement established the setting of the disabled to be seen in the community.
*Disability was still an issue but the people were treated more humane.
*Public Education was available to the individual -
1980-Present (Self Determined Wave)
*This movement allowed the disabled to live the life they wanted to live.
*They began to go to college and hold jobs in the normal world.
*In 1992 the AAMR (American Association on Mental Retardation) this established how severe the disorder was and allowed them based on their I.Q.
*As a community and society we support them at what they are good at. Finding their strengths such as what they like to do.
*Their disability has become irrelevant to the world.
