Technology in the 70's
The 70's did not have digital cameras, camcorders, portable alternative light sources, superglue for processing fingerprints, personal computers, AFIS, or DNA capabilities. -
Pictures for Mugshots
Polaroid camera's for taking Mugshot pictures or instant shots. -
Video footage
reel-to-reel black and white video unit that weighed about 40 lbs. You needed an extra person just to carry it around. Later in the years switched to cam-recorders,they acted much lighter and had color filming. -

Using technology to see what the naked eye can't.
Portable light sources to see bodily fluids from the human bodies. They had a 20,000 dollar lasers that were really big, it requires a single vehicle to take it to the crime scene. So instead they just took potential examples from the scene that could maybe help them. -
superglue
use the fumes from superglue to develop latent prints on many surfaces, including the interior and exterior of vehicles. -
Advancements of finger printing
The police got AFIS and the process was changed 100%.The prints they took were saved and eventually lead them t the bad guys. -
DNA Capabilities
Back then a simple sample of semen couldn't catch anyone but as technology improve they can do a lot better. Once it improved they could extract DNA from hair, saliva, fibers, latent fingerprints, etc. Now they can even take DNA from a parent and match it with DNA from a son or daughter. Once we have DNA evidence we can enter it into CODIS and look for a match. -
Portable battery
they allow you to examine the scene much more thoroughly and efficiently. You can have one with you on all cases you work to scan the scene for that evidence that will help make the case. -
thumb printing
Theories state that before 700 B.C the Chinese had recorded thumb prints upon clay in order to have a form of classification system. -
Today's computers
Today, the evidence room is computerized, making it easy to track things for court. Officers save time by completing their crime scene reports and forms on their PCs. They can also quickly and easily transfer crime scene digital images and videos to their PCs and then create sophisticated PowerPoint presentations. They also have things like 3D imaging programs that make it easy to create crime scene diagrams.
