History of Community Colleges

  • Need for skilled workforce

    In the early 20th century, developed countries realized there was a need for a more skilled workforce. Many high school graduates were reluctant to attend a university do to the long move that was usually required.
  • Community Colleges are Created

    To increase the skills of the general population, community colleges are created. These colleges were more numerous than the number of universities, so people didn't have to travel far from home to attend.
    The American Association of Community Colleges, AACC, is created.
  • Phoenix College is Born

    Phoenix Junior College (later to become Phoenix College) is created in 1920, the first community college in Arizona.
  • MCCCD is Created

    The Maricopa County Junior College District is established (which will become Maricopa Community College District, MCCCD) , and more community colleges open in Arizona.
  • Improving Skills

    The technical skills of the population improve, both in nationally and in Arizona, because community colleges provide a more affordable and accessible alternative to traditional universities.
  • Community Colleges Continue to Expand

    Nationally there are over 900 community colleges, and locally, MCCCD now has 10 community colleges.
