John Pemberton's Birth
John Pemberton was born in Knoxville, Georgia. He will later invent the formula for Coca-Cola. He earned his medical degree at 19 and opened his own drug store. -
"Pemberton's French Wine Coca"
John fought in the Battle of Columus, where was wounded. He became addicted to morphine. Trying to find a cure, as a chemist, he developed his wine that was said to cure headaches and other mental ailments. This formula contained traces of cocaine in it. -
Atlanta Enacts Temperance Legislation
When Atlanta enforced the Temperance Legislation, Pemberton was forced to find a non-alcoholic alternative to his French Wine Coca formula. Thus began the development of the original Coca-Cola formula. -
First Coca-Cola Sold
Pemberton sells the Coca-Cola syrup from a brass kettle in his backyard as a drink for 5 cents a glass. This syrup contained extracts of cocaine, sugar (this sweetened the mix in place of the wine), and kola nut, which has a high caffeine content. Later, the carbonated water was added to make it a soft drink. It was sold as a tonic, similar to Pemberton's French Wine Coca. -
Asa Candler Purchases the Formula
For $2,300 Asa Candler bought the formula from Pemberton and other shareholders. Because Pemberton never really focused on the potential success of the drink, its popularity really increased after Candler gained control and started marketing it well. John Pemberton died on August 16, 1888. -
Coca-Cola is trademarked.
Frank M. Robinson, Pemberton's book keeper, developed the logo and name of Coca-Cola. The script of the logo is in his handwriting because as a book keeper, he had great penmanship. On this day, he registered Coca-Cola as a trade mark. -

First Soft Drink in Space.
Coca Cola became the first soft drink in outer space on the space shuttle Challenger. Coca-Cola actually developed and tested a " Coca-Cola Space-Can". This actually did not work so well because of the lack of gravity: the liquid and the carbonation stayed seperated. The company then spent more time and money to develop an appropriate model--"Fluids Generic Bioprocessing Aparatus-1". Their ultimate goal was to study the perceptions of taste in various environments. -
Opening of The World of Coke
The World of Coca Cola is opened in Atlanta, Georgia on Pemberton Place. It was officially opened on this date, This replaced the original Coca-Cola museum that opened in 1991 and stayed open until it was replaced by this one. At the World of Coca-Cola, one can see Coke artifacts from around the world, learn about the Coke legends and secret formula, and witness an actual factory line of Coca-Cola bottles being filled. -

Today, there are as many as 19 different types of Coca-Cola, excluding international variations.
