Before the arrival of the Spaniards, Chia was a minor chiefdom that was part of the chieftainship of Bacatá, which in turn belonged to the territories of Zipa. According to tradition referring Fray Pedro Simon, the chief of Chia, nephew of the chief of Bogota, was to inherit this position his death.9 By the end of March 1537 the Spaniards, led by Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada came to Chia 10 they found abandoned, for all its inhabitants had already left. In 1783, during the insurrection of the villagers, the march of the insurgents to Santa Fe stopped near the town of Chia, the crossing of the Rio Bogota, in what is now known as the Bridge of the Common. There Viceroy signed a series of concessions to the commoners, which then would challenge by being signed "under pressure".
