Phenakistiscope
Phenakistiscope made by James Plateau in 1832. This was one of the first animation devices that made an illusion of motion. The device was made to show a reflection through a mirror of disk with pictures in it and make it seem as if the picture were moving when it was just the reflection of the mirror.

Praxinoscope
The Praxinoscope was made by Emile Reynaud in 1889. It is a device that used mirrors to project a sequence of images, along with a still background, onto a screen. It was a very complex machine that quickly made good entertainment. Its important because its the last thing used before the film projector.

Gertie the Dinosaur
Gertie the Dinosaur is one of the first popular animations to be released and it was made by Windsor McCay. This piece is important because its the first to use keyframe and its the first piece to use a dinosaur.

Felix the Cat was the first animated character to attract movie sized audiences and he was created by Pat Sullivan and Otto Messmer. Felix was a iconic character that appeared in cartoons and movies from the silent film era to the 1950s.

Snow White is the first full-length cel animated feature film and the first Disney animated feature film and it was released in 1938 at a cost of $1.5M. It had international earnings of $8M and the US Library of Congress called the film "culturally historically or aesthetically significant"

First Computer Generated Facial Animation
Fred Parke Graduated from the University of Utah and while he was there he created the first computer generated facial animation with wire frame graphics and Gouraud shading that estimates curving surfaces.

Tron

In 2001 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to start giving out an award for the best animated feature, that was more than 40 minutes long, of that year. The First winner was Shrek (2001) in 2002 and the most recent winner was Inside Out (2015).
