The Praxinoscope
Who: William Horner.
What: A contraption that allowed the viewer to see images through slits. The rotating images inside give the illusion of a "moving image."
Where: England, but earlier versions emerged in early Iran and China.
Why: This is considered the first form of "motion pictures" ever made.

Stop Motion
Who: J. Stuart Blackman.
What: The very first stop-motion animation to be made. Originally called enhanced drwings, this film made drawings seem to come alive without an artist.
Where: The United States.
Why: Combined stop motion and silent film to make the first animation film on SD video.

Katsudo Shashin
Who: Unknown.
What: A boy writes the Kanji for "Motion Picture" on a board, then takes off his hat to salute.
Where: Discovered in Japan.
Why: Known as the oldest animation in Japan. This appears to have been mass-produced.

Fantasmagorie
Who: Emile Cohl.
What: Depicting a clown in sevral different situations, Fantasmagoire became the very first actuall animation.
Where: France.
Why: Became a hit and landmark as the "first animation."

Steamboat Willie
Who: The Walt Disney.
What: A film involving Mickey Mouse and his adventures. A landmark animated film.

Why: This is the first animated film to incorporate sound. Also it had really good animation.
