Laboratory Animal Welfare Act
President Lyndon Johnson signed this act. It covered the transport, sale, and handling of animals and provided for licensing of animal dealers to prevent pet theft and their sale to research facilities. -
Expansion of the Animal Welfare Act
This expanded law covers all warm-blooded animals used for research, testing, experimentation, and exhibition. The act now regulates research facilities to protect animals in the entire research process and exhibitors like carnivals, circuses, and zoos. -
Protection for Animals in Transit
This amendment includes any airline, railroad, motor carrier, shipping line, or other enterprises that Transit animals. These animals are to be protected and transported in a comfortable manner. -
PETA
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals was founded. It is currently the largest organization against animal abuse. It is dedicated to defending the rights of ALL animals. -
More Protection for Laboratory Animals
This addition to the Animal Welfare Act gives better protection to laboratory animals. This amendment ensures to enrich nonhuman primates' lives, provides exercises for dogs, and considers alternatives to painful or distressful procedures. Many animal care committees were established during this time as well. -
Say STOP to Animal Cruelty!
Many big-name brands such as Revlon have agreed to stop animal testing and have contributed millions of dollars to the research for animal cruelty. -
Pet Protection Act
This amendment was added to the Animal Welfare Act to protect cats and dogs that were being held in shelters. It was made a requirement that they have to be kept in the shelter for at least five days before being sold to a research facility. -
The Protection of More Animals
More additions were added to the Animal Welfare Act that gave many more animal protection such as rats and birds used for research and breeding purposes. -
Animal Fighting Prohibition Enforcement Act
This amendment prohibits attaching sharp instruments such as knives to birds' legs during animal fighting. There are criminal penalties for fighting ventures that have been increased. -
More Protection for Dogs
This amendment was made to ensure that dogs imported to the United States have to be at least six months of age, in good health, and have the vaccinations it needs. The amendment also strengthens dog fighting prohibition and increases fines for violating the Animal Welfare Acts. -
Small-scale Exhibitors?
This amendment excludes owners of common, domesticated household pets who derive less than a substantial portion of their income for exhibiting an animal that exclusively resides at their residence from licensing requirements. -
No Animal Testing!
The Environmental Protection Agency announced plans to hopefully completely eliminate the use of mammals to test the toxicity of chemicals. -
More Animal Fight Prohibitions
There were more prohibitions added on animal fighting in United States territories such as Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Animals would no longer get hurt by these fights.
