Traditional Maori use
Wynyard Quarter was traditionally used as a Mahinga-kai (food gathering place) with many villages built around it with an easily accesable water source by the shore. -
Reclaimation
The western reclaimation was being quickly progressed by the "Ports of Auckland" predecessor to develop a flat land suitable for port activities. -
Timber trade
After the reclaimation the area was utilised as a timber trade. -
Petroleum storage
Known as the "Tank Farm", the area was being used as a petro-chemical storage -
Vision
In 2005 "Ports of Auckland" developed a vision to transform Wynyard Quarter into a community -
Development
Sea+City projects were put in charge to oversee the development of Wynyard Quarter -
Council controlled organisation
Waterfront Auckland (Eke Panuku) was put in charge to be the Council controlled organisation. -
Community
500m of new public space created Silo Park, North Wharf, Karanga Plaza and the Wynyard Crossing Bridge. -
Present day
Wynyard quarter is now home to 1,100 people and 500-600 apartments, with access to public transportation and easil accesable places to eat.
