  • NBA Arrives in NC

    The Charlotte Hornets played their first game on this date, bringin the world of professional sports to NC in a brand new way. The Hornets' pinstripe uniform would go on to inspire such NBA teams as the Rockets, Magic, and Bulls. NBA superstars Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning made their name playing for the Hornets. The franchise moved to New Orleans in 2002 after many turbulent events led fans to largely abandon the team.
  • 1988 Presidential Election

    George Bush defeated Michael Dukakis in the presidential election. Bush had been Ronald Regan's vice president, and Reagan's extreme popularity contributed to Bush's election. This was also significant because it signaled another four years of a Republican in office.
  • First Sibling

    My first brother, John, was born after I had just turned two. I enjoyed playing "mother" and I whatever my mother did to John, I mimicked on my baby doll.
  • Gulf War Begins

    United Nations forces, led by the US, waged war against Iraq after Iraqi troops invaded the neighboring nation of Kuwait. Iraq's leader, Saddam Hussein, ordered the invasion. Iraq had been an ally of the Soviet Union during the Cold War so it already had a tense relationship with the USA. Territorial disputes with Kuwait and a desperate need for money led Iraq to launch an invasion of Kuwait. The US joined a coalition of UN forces to repel the invasion. The conflict lasted about 6 months..
  • Dissolution of the Soviet Union

    Signaling the "official" end of the Cold War, the Soviet Union ceased to exist as many republics of the USSR declared their independence. This had been a long time coming, as recent Soviet leaders had moved more towards oppenness and democracy.
  • Kindergarten

    I entered "big kid school" for the first time in the fall of 1992! I loved center time, naptime, and arts and crafts. The only disappointing thing about kindergarten was that I didn't get to ride the bus, which made me feel like I wasn't a "real" big kid.
  • First Redskins Game

    On a cold December day I attended my very first Redskins game at RFK stadium. Our tickets put us right behind the Redskins bench, but I was too short to see, so I made my dad move up into the nosebleed section! The Skins beat the Falcons 30-17 (that's right I have never forgotten the score!)
  • Oklahoma City Bombing

    Timothy McVeigh, a former soldier, detonated a bomb at a government building in Oklahoma City. It was the largest act of domestic terrorism in history.
