  • First Manual Training School

    First Manual Training School
    In St. Louis, Missouri the first career and technical education school opened up. The CTE that we know today began here. This is where classroom instruction tied in with hands on learning.
  • Calvin M. Woodward.

    Calvin M. Woodward.
    Calvin M. Woodward developed the manual training school. This offered students the ability to develop woodworking and metal skills, even though their products were not made for profit. This helped students develop mind-hand coordination.
  • Pioneering Manual Training School Opens

    Pioneering Manual Training School Opens
    This school gave students the opportunity to gain a skillful trade that could last them a lifetime. The schools motto included a line in it that stated "Hail to the skillful cunning hand!". This line emphasizes the importance of career and technical education and the emphasis on a trade or skill that will last a student for a lifetime.
  • Founder of FFA was born.

    Founder of FFA was born.
    On this day, Henry C. Groseclose was born. He is one of four men who founded the Future Farmers of Virginia, which led to the creation of FFA. He is considered to be the "Father of FFA".
  • Edna P. Amidon is born.

    Edna P. Amidon is born.
    Mrs. Amidon taught home economics for many years. She is considered the founder of the Future Homemakers of America (FCCLA). In addition to being the founder of this CTSO, she served on the advisory board for this organization.
  • Hamden L. Forkner is born.

    Hamden L. Forkner is born.
    Mr. Forkner is considered to be the founder of FBLA, the Future Business Leaders of America. The concept was developed in 1937 by Mr. Forkner while he was a professor at Colombia University, but a CTSO chapter was not adopted until 1942 in Tennessee.

    Booker T. Washington.
    He proposed an idea of “industrial education”, in which blacks were to go to school and learn a trade. He believed in this way blacks would prove themselves valuable to the community and eventually grow into an equal member.
  • Hoke Smith becomes a Senator.

    Hoke Smith becomes a Senator.
    Senator Hoke Smith became a senator on November 16th, 1911. He is one of the two senators that created the Smith Hughes Act, which provides the funding for vocational education in schools.
  • Dudley M. Hughes elected to congress.

    Dudley M. Hughes elected to congress.
    D.M. Hughes was a representative from Georgias 12th congressional district. He served alongside Senator Hoke Smith to help pass the Smith Hughes Act which gave funding to schools for vocational education.

    Smith Hughes National Vocational Education Act
    This act specifically encouraged vocational education to be taught in schools. This act wasn't just for agriculture, but for other career technical programs as well. In addition, it allowed career technical programs to have the necessary funds to operate efficiently. It is the essence of why we are able to have CTE courses and programs in our schools.

    F. Gordon Bonser
    Gordon Bonser advocated the inclusion of industrial arts into the elementary school with a study of manufacturing industries as the curriculum base, with the goal of developing an understanding of the functioning of our industrial society. Industrial arts was to be a general education subject desirable for all to take.

    In 1928, Future Farmers of America was founded in Blacksburg, Virginia. This was formed by several male students to help prepare future generation to help feed a growing population.
  • President Roosevelt

    President Roosevelt
    President Roosevelt transferred the function of the Federal Board for Vocational Education to the Office of U.S. Education.
  • FBLA is founded.

    FBLA is founded.
    IN 1937 the Future Business Leaders of America was founded. The first chapter was started in Johnson City, Tennessee. This CTSO is to help students prepare to be community leaders, while also preparing them to be effective business leaders.
  • Founding of FHA (FCCLA)

    Founding of FHA (FCCLA)
    FHA stands for Future Homemakers of America. In 1999, the name changed to Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. This is a premiere CTE student organization and is to help prepare men and women for the home and the workplace.
  • DECA was founded.

    DECA was founded.
    DECA stands for Distributive Education Clubs of America. This CTSO was designed specifically made for students interested in marketing. Many students end up in training programs after school and being enrolled in DECA.
  • Public Law 81-740

    Public Law 81-740
    This law gave the National FFA Organization its national charter. It is essentially the governance document for FFA. Public Law 81-740 is the reason that we are able to teach agriscience and run an FFA program within the schools.
  • Vocational Industrial Clubs of America is founded.

    Vocational Industrial Clubs of America is founded.
    VICA was founded in 1965 but later changed its name to SkillsUSA in 2004. This organization pushes for students to be champions in skilled trades. This organization is yet another reason that CTSOs help prepare students to be career ready.
  • BPA is founded.

    BPA is founded.
    In 1966 the Business Professionals of America was founded. This CTSO helps prepare students going into the business world and become global leaders. BPA focuses on leadership, citizenship, academic, and technological skills for students to carry into the business world.
  • HOSA was founded.

    HOSA was founded.
    This is an career technical education program that helps prepare future health professionals to become leaders. In addition, it helps students become career ready.
  • TSA is founded.

    TSA is founded.
    TSA stands for Technology Student Association. This CTSO is meant for any middle or high school student who are engaged or interested in STEM. Since its founding, it has helped advance science, technology, engineering, and mathematical skills for the betterment of students.
  • National Technical Honor Society is founded.

    National Technical Honor Society is founded.
    This is a society to recognize outstanding students in the CTE setting. It recognizes their achievements and gives nearly 300,000 dollars to students annually in scholarships. This society connects industry with a high quality education.
  • Corey Flournoy

    Corey Flournoy
    In 1994, Corey Flournoy becomes the first African American to become the National FFA Organizations National President. This broke barriers and helped promote diversity in the organization and CTE.

    Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)
    This act effects every student across the nation that is enrolled in public education. This requires all schools to teach students based on high academic standards in order to prepare them for college and the work force. It is the reason teachers must abide by the curriculum of their course.

    Perkins V Passed
    Perkins V is what many people in the CTE field refer to it as, but it is officially known as The Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act. This act that was passed by President Trump, allows 1.4 billion dollars annually for various different types of career technical education programs.
