The U.S declared war because of the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbor. Spain lost ownership of the land pieces Cuba, Puerto Rice, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and many others. Spain ended up losing the war which resulted in the signing of the Treat of Paris. -
