Roanoke
The Lost Colony of Roanoke got its name because the leader, John White, brought settlers over from England, including his family and his granddaughter who was the first European born in the Americas. They came to the Americas to find a north American settlement, look for gold and silver, and to try and convert the people. John then returned back to England to get resources and returned three years later to find his colony gone.

Jamestown
Jamestown is the first English settlement in North America. The harsh winters and diseases almost made Jamestown fail. The settlers found out that you could grow tobacco, which became a cash crop, and was their biggest export. The Natives and settlers fought over land. John Rolfe and Pocahontas, which was a member of the Native tribe, got married which made peace between the groups.

Maryland
English Catholics sailed over fleeing England due to anti-Catholic persecution. Discovered by Cecil Calvert, the colony guaranteed religious freedom.

Salutary Neglect
The Salutary Neglect was an unofficial document declaring that the American colonies are under British rule. Robert Walpole put this in act. This made enforcement of trade laws lenient.

House of Burgesses
The House of Burgesses was the colonists break away from the English monarch. The colonist took advantages of the English rights and put together the House of Burgesses which encouraged English craftsmen to come over and settle and make conditions more agreeable for the people who lived there.

Mayflower/ Plymouth/ Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower was an English ship the brought over Puritans into the new world. They landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts where they had to learn and adapt to the new changes and harsh winters. The Mayflower compact established the foundation of their government. It started out as self government then became the majority of the men is how they will make decisions.

New York
New York was a Dutch colony and was originally called New Amsterdam. Founded by Peter Minuit, bought this land from Natives with jewelry and then surrendered to the English who renamed it New york after the Duke.

Massachusetts Bay Colony
A group of about 1,000 puritans came over from England in hopes to purify the church. The people who lead the puritans were John Winthrop and Thomas Dudley. The leaders wanted to prevent any type of religious independence and different religious beliefs.

Rhode Island
Rhode Island was discovered by five separate groups most of which are who left Massachusetts Bay colony. Williams, one of the five founders, was banished by England due to religious beliefs. Its original name was Roodt Eylandt which means red island.

Connecticut

Maryland Toleration Act
Known as the "Act concerning religion" the Maryland toleration act ruled religious tolerance. The Calvert family, who were Catholic, wanted to protect Catholic settlers. Carolina
Carolina was the place effort of the English to settle in the New World. They built a settlement but it soon disappeared, which is known as the lost colony of Roanoke. The Carolinas was soon founded again by John Yeamens, he created a settlement on the Cape Fear river. They were influenced heavily by the British taxation.

Bacon’s rebellion
Bacon’s rebellion took place in Jamestown, Virginia. Lead by Nathaniel Bacon, believed that him and his troops should move out the natives that lived in the land and believed that their governor was not providing them the right protection and gave them high taxes on tobacco.

Pennsylvania
Founded by William Penn and other colonist to seek religious freedom from Quakers, trade and profits. Penn received land from King James II, who owed money to Penns dead father. Penn and the other colonists were trying to leave before getting persecuted.

Salem witch trials
Began in Salem village, Massachusetts, when a group of young girls claimed they were possessed by the devil and were trialed a few days later. Bridget Bishop was the first trialed for witchcraft and was hung shortly after that in June. The people believed women and children were practicing witchcraft and were being taken over by the devil.

French Indian War
The British were under James Wolfe and beat the French who were under Joseph de Montcalm. The war lasted seven years. The British had an alliance with the Indians. The long war ended with a treaty. The treaty of Paris declared that France lost the Canada and had to give Louisiana to Spain. The British received Florida and upper Canada.

The Albany Plan was a plan to put English colonies under a government rule. The British government ordered a meeting because they wanted to establish a treaty between the colonies.

Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763, made by the British towards the end of the French and Indian war to create boundaries. This line separated the British colonies and American Indian west lands.
