  • Dred Scott v. Sandford

    Dred Scott was the first legal matter considering state and national citizenship. The courts deemed him not a state citizen after being "released" from slavery. But, it was highly disputed because many states saw slaves as citizens.
  • New Control of the Whitehouse

    Abraham Lincoln took control of the Whitehouse through the polls. He made all free blacks American Citizens.
  • Civil Rights Act

    This act created the right that all people born or naturalized in the United States were citizens of the United States and the state they live in, no matter their race. But, this act excluded "Indians not taxed" and American-born citizens "subject to any foreign power". This civil rights act did not include political voting as well. For example, children and women still could not vote.
  • Fourteenth Amendment

    This amendment was not specifically created to discuss citizenship at first. Later the Senate added sentences about being a natural-born citizen of being naturalized to become one. It continuously left out Native American Tribes,
  • Fifteenth Amendment

    Gives black men the right to vote.
  • Chinese Exclusion Act

    Does not allow any more Chinese workers into the United States. The are threatened with imprisonment or being kicked out of the United States.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Creates the term "separate but equal". Allowed for legal segregation.
  • Jones Act

    Gives Puerto Ricans citizenship.
  • Ozawa v. United States

    The first generation of Japenese will never be granted citizenship.
  • Native Americans

    All Native Americans became citizens.
  • The Magnuson Act

    Gets rid of the Chinese Exclusion Act and allows the Chiese to become eligible to become a U.S. citizen.
  • The Immigration and Nationality Act

    This act lets any race become eligible for naturalization.
  • The Refugee Act

    Fixes the criteria to allow more refugees into the U.S.
