  • Naturalization Law

    Passed by Congress in 1790, citizenship was limited to free white people. After civil war and 14th amendment, African Americans got citizenship, Asian immigrants became the most significant group in terms of citizenship eligability.

  • Susan B. Anthony

    Susan B. Anthony and 50 other women try to vote. Her and 14 other women are arrested. Judge tells Jury to find her guilty so they do. They give her $100 fine which she refuses to pay.

  • Gold rush in Black Hills

    1. A. Gold found in Sioux land. People wanted to get the gold from the Sioux land but they need permission to do so because it's the Sioux land (treaty). the Sioux call American govt. to get Americans off their land, the govt. only removes a few miners. The Black Hills were sacred to the Sioux people; have religious importance. Sioux leaders sitting bull and crazy horse, refuse to accept treaty and live off the reservation. US govt. says sitting bull and crazy horse are the problem.

    Electoral votes elected winner but loser had the popular vote (like 2016 election)
  • Battle at Little Big Horn

    Gen. George Custer and soldiers vs. Sioux, about 12x more Sioux. Sioux kill general and army and win. US declares treaty is void and the Black Hills are no longer on the reservation.

    President Rutherford B. Hayes says weaker races are Natives, the chinese, and African Americans
  • Dawes Severalty Act

    Natives can be by themselves, not on a reservation. Dawes act: each Sioux family gets 160 acres of farmland or 320 acres of grazing land. others were for white people. Last tribe members told to disappear. Americans broke up Natives culture, tribe structure. Sioux land is dramatically reduced.

  • Coal Mining Strike

    A square deal for industry and labor workers demand 20% raise, union recognic=tion, and 8 hour work day--owners refuse to negotiate and 150,000 miners strike--Union and mine owners called to Washington D.C. --dispute settled by arbitration-workers get 10%raise, 9 hour workday and union recognition. Both sides agree to arbitration.

    The Great Migration

    Two waves, first, 1910-1940, second,1940-1970. Wars create jobs in the north, people move up to get jobs. Up to 1910: 90% of African Americans lived in the South. 1970: 53% of African Americans lived in South, --40% lived in North, 7% in West, 1910-1930: about 1.6 million African Americans leave the South.
