Horace Mann
Horace Mann's determination influenced society to recognize a need for a "common school" that welcomed all students regardless of social class, race, and gender. He also proposed that local schools needed an educational system that would hold the school up to certain standards. -
Brown v. Board of Education
The Supreme Court put an end to school segregation solely on the basis of race. This was the start for society to slowly accept diversity between races. African Americans were able to have better school conditions and educational gaps between the races began to fill. -
Nation at Risk
This controversial report gave way to fear that ultimately has changed public schools. The fear of not being a smart enough nation lead to enforcing higher standards of education. Which resulted in the No Child Left behind Act to be signed into law, along with common core education to be placed in public schools. -
Individuals with Disabilites Education Act (IDEA)
The passing of IDEA allowed students with disabilities the opportunities to education and allow students to meet their highest potential. Just like the Brown v. Board of Education it gave students exposure to diversity and allowed students with disabilities to feel equal in society.
