  • Brown vs. The Board of Education

    Brown vs. The Board of Education
    A monumental court decision that overturned Plessy v. Ferguson. Overruling that "separate but equal" is inherently unequal. It was a huge turning point for the Civil Rights Movement, and led to the push for integration in schools. It definitely had an enormous impact on the educational system and still affects it today.
  • Coleman Report

    Coleman Report
    Even though the Coleman Report had some negative side effects that came along with it, it sparked people to investigate further into different aspects of education. It was commissioned to see the quality of the schools in the US. It focused on how integrated schools were doing, and how the students were adjusting in them. This study was revised and redone multiple times, but it helped start to better the education system.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)

    Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
    This was a big step for children with disabilities to get the proper education they needed. It helped to equal the playing field further. There are different aspects to the IDEA plan that help give a better education plan for children with disability. It was a big moment where children with disabilities were often overlooked, and now are given a better opportunity to learn in the public school system.
  • No Child Left Behind (NCLB)

    No Child Left Behind (NCLB)
    Even though NCLB brings up a bit of controversy in the educational system today, it did have some benefits. There was an emphasis on teacher assessment, and achievement. It also gave schools standards to meet in order to make schools more equivalent across the nation. Trying to standardized schools comes with its own problems but the overall idea of it is beneficial.
  • Virtual Education

    Virtual Education
    There has been a slow progression of adding a virtual component into education. It is a part of education that will continue to be present through the ages. It is a new component in the classroom, and can also be used completely independently. Virtual education gives a huge opportunity to students from all over the world.
