American Indian Boarding Schools
This movement was to drag kids off of the reservation to change their ways into a new culture. They wanted the native culture to be beaten out of them. After this movement, cruel and unusual punishment was stopped and there was a segregation of schools so that tribes could have their own schools. Lastly, they made multicultural studies a priority. This is important for schools now days so that children are not mistreated for their cultural background. -
National School Lunch Act
This is a federally assisted meal program in public and non profit private schools. It is put in place to provide schools with free lunches or low-cost healthy meals. This act was signed off by President Harry Truman. This is important to make sure that each student is getting food in each day and making sure that no children are starving or struggling. -
National Defense Education Act
This was an act to promote further education such as postsecondary education. It was intended that the NDEA would help enable the country to become more competitive in the areas of science and technology in regard to national security. This was important because it recognized the importance of science and technology in education to better the world around us. -
Engel v. Vitale
This was a Supreme Court case which stated that it was unconstitutional for state officials to require a school prayer in public schools. This was important because it made it so that school wasn't based on religion and children and families had their own choices for what they choose to believe in. -
Lau v. Nichols
This was a Supreme Court case which ruled that under the Civil Rights Act schools must provide non english speaking students with english language so that it provided an equal education. This was important because it ensured that each student could get an equal opportunity to learn.
