The Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan was reborn in 1915 by Colonel William Joseph Simmons in Georgia. Modeled after the first KKK, this group had rituals and hierarchy which attracted about 5 million new members nationwide. They included white women, organized lynching and night riding (they killed people that were of color, and adulterers). While they wore their robes and hoods made of white cloth. By the end of the 1920s, the Klan fizzled out. (They later came back during the 1950s and 1960s). -

Influenza Death Toll
Seven hundred thousand Americans died from the flu epidemic. Nearly 20% of the population died. The economy fell dramatically and unemployment was at 20%. -

The Prohibition Era
Women made up the majority of moviegoers and Mary Pickford was popular (she wore short skirts, make-up, and smoked cigarettes). Speakeasies and Blind tigers became popular during the probation era because women called flappers started to go there to party with young men. These places sold alcohol illegally. -

Warren G. Harding became the nation's 29th president. His administration would long be remembered for the scandals that plagued it. -
Emergency Immigration Act (1921) & National Origins Act (1924)
1921 - Emergency Immigration Act: temporary fix for problems with immigration. 1924 - National Origins Act: established permanent country-of-origin quotas. The number of immigrants annually admitted into the United States from each nation was restricted to 2% of the population who had immigrated from that country and lived in the US since 1890. -
The Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was a time when many people celebrated theater, art, and music. They came to the Harlem District to enjoy shows and entertainment, but black people were excluded from these shows. These performances showcased black cultural heritage and captured the populations current experience. -
Scopes vs. Monkey Trial
John T. Scopes involved in scopes versus monkey trial. He taught evolutionary views in a biology classroom. On May 21, 1925 he was being tried. First trial to be nationally broadcast. Smoot-Hawly Tariff - 1930
Herbert Hoover signed the Smoot-Hawley Tariff (tax) which charged Americans more for the same goods. Panic was the main cause of the Great Depression. Hoover established the Presidents Organization for Unemployment Relief (POUR) to help families in need. Most charities closed due to no more money. -
Franklin Delano Roosevelt - 32nd U.S. President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt elected president. During his term Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps; the Federal Emergency Relief Administration; the Tennessee Valley Authority; Agriculture Adjustment Administration; National Recovery Administration; and FDR designed/proposed New Deal programs/policies with the South in mind. 1935 - Social Security Act installed. (Old age pensions, unemployment insurance etc...) -
Stock Market Crash/Great Depression
Stock market crashed and the Great Depression arrived. Four-fifths J.D. Rockefeller‘s fortune vanished. Economy built on production and consumption of durable goods. Production slowed, inventory piled up, and companies fired workers. Americans had fewer means to purchase products and consumer goods which fueled gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the 1920s. -

Japan and China began fighting. China asked for US help. Hitler & the Nazis conquered and rebuilt entire German Navy. 1939 - Hitler & Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia, & Poland. French & British allies prepared for war on Germany. 1942 - Germany was losing. War plans were discussed between FDR, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. Operation Overlord (D-Day) was launched with success (Hitler committed suicide). US used atomic bombs on Hiroshima & Nagasaki Japan, & Japan surrendered. WWII was over! -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor Naval Base in Hawaii. U.S. Gov. signed declaration of war after it was requested by President FDR. Japan tried to cripple U.S. navy
