The Failure of the Roanoke Colony
This was the first English attempt to migrate to the New World in the hopes of creating an English settlement. After a short time, however, contact with the colony was completely lost. Virginia Company Settles Jamestown
These Englishman seeking profit were the first settlers to arrive with the "American" mentality of making a better, freer life. They founded the first successful English Colony Jamestown, and they convinced other English citizens that even with the failure of Roanoke, The wild land of the New World could be settled.

Pilgrims Arrive
The PIlgrims were the first migrants to arrive in America for religious freedom. After the King of England forced English citizens to join the Church of England, the Pilgrims (Separatists) were forced to head for America, bringing their ideas to a degree of religious freedom.

New Amsterdam Taken by Great Britain
New Amsterdam, settled by the Dutch and Belgians in the 1620s, was taken by the British in a war with the Netherlands. Although it came under British control, a large portion of the aristocratic population of New Amsterdam remained Dutch.

Palatine Migration

Irish Rebellion of 1798
This rebellion, sparked by the revolutions of America and France, ended horrifically for the Irish insurgents. Many Irish revolutionaries fled Ireland after England's brutal campaign to rid Ireland of all of the rebels, and a large percentage of them found refuge in the United States of America.

Chinese Exclusion Act
This notorious act restricted ALL Chinese immigrants from entering America. This stemmed from the racism towards Asians at the time as well as the fear that the Chinese would take too many American jobs. Gentleman's Agreement of 1907
This Agreement was between Japan and the United States. Japan agreed to stop allowing its citizens to emigrate to America; this agreement was in large part due to the rising concern of the numbers of Japanese immigrants at this time.

Messina Earthquake in Sicily
This massive earthquake in Sicily forced many homless Italians to immigrate to the United States. These Italian immigrants, never intending to permanently remain in the U.S., found factory jobs in New York City and other New England cities, and many decided to permanently remain in America.

Jewish Refugees Turned Away

Bracero Progam
This was a series of acts passed to encourage Mexican immigrants to enter the United States to work lower income American jobs. These programs allowed Mexican workers to come to the United States for the duration of WWII before being sent back to Mexico; however, many of these Mexican immigrants did not return to Mexico at the end of the war as was planned.
