    Pre-historic

    People have been drawing since the beginning of human history. The earliest drawings date back to 30,000- 10,000 BCE, and were found on cave walls of Altamira, Spain and Lascaux, France.
  • Period: 3100 BCE to 330 BCE

    Ancient Egypt

    Early Egyptians decorated the walls of their temples and tombs by carving scenes of their daily life. Egyptian drawings use flat, linear style.
  • Period: 776 BCE to 323 BCE

    Ancient Greece

    The vases and pottery that were drawn by Ancient Greeks show their graceful, decorative use of drawing. They use art to depict scenes of battles and myths.
  • Period: 400 to 1400 BCE

    Middle Ages

    Drawings were made, for the most part, to express religious messages and stories of the Bible. People would draw their preparations on wood, slate or wax, because parchment and animal hides were expensive.

    Renaissance

    In the late 1300′s, artists began to use paper (as opposed to parchment, or tablets made of stone or wood) more frequently than ever to explore their ideas for painting and fresco designs. These early drawings can give the observer an inside view of what the artist was thinking before commencing a painting.

    Baroque Period

    The Baroque Period introduced new style of drawing that included livelier forms with flowing lines. Artist also began using water color and ink washes. Artist also began to have access to sketchbooks that they could take outside to draw what they see.

    1800's and 1900's

    Pencils were first manufactured early in the 1800's and quickly became the most preferred drawing tool.Capturing the movement of everyday scenes became signatures of Ingres and Goya who were the principal artists.
