    Viking Contact

    First settlement by non Indigenous peoples is created in Newfoundland by the Vikings
  • 1497

    Giovanni Caputo

    Italian explorer Giovanni Caputo "finds" the coast of North America and claims the land for the English Crown. This led to the Spanish and Portuguese to follow suit

    Jacques Cartier

    Mr. Cartier claims the land for France, names the gulf and river Saint Lawrence, after the feast day upon which he arrived.

    French Settlement

    Several failed attempts by the French to settle and place permanent settlements finally led to the success of the establishment of Quebec and Port-Royal. No exact guarantee on when this became official.

    Beaver Wars

    French attempt to seize control of the area surrounding Hudson's Bay. Met with resistance not only from the English but their First Nation allies as well. Other tribes banded with the French to stop both English and English allied tribes from growing too powerful.

    English colonists from the south immigrate and form colonies in Newfoundland and south of the Hudson Bay

    7 Years War

    French speaking Acadians are deported and removed from near Canadian borderlands and were forced into what would become modern day Louisiana and new Orleans. France would eventually lose the war and cede Canada to the English crown, while soon to be American lands were given to Spain, England's allies.
  • War of 1812

    British-Canada and now free America wage war on each other, with the White House being set on fire. This ended up not changing much, although the treaties afterwards would establish a much more formal and agreed upon border between Canada and the USA.
  • Act of Union

    This act created a new province called Canada out of upper and lower Canada. This was followed by British concessions and granted Canada a previously unheld allowance of self governance.
  • Constitution Act

    Declares Canada as a self-governing democracy with Ottawa as the capitol city. This is followed by the Hudson's Bay company to sell Rupert's land to the new democracy. Indigenous and Metis inhabitants of said land rose in rebellion, and federal government met several of their demands
  • North-West Rebellion / Louis Riel

    A non successful rebellion led by Louis Riel led to his capture, trial, and execution. This put him on a divided pedestal as either a great martyr, or traitorous villain.
  • Statute of Westminster

    After devastating losses in the World War, Canadian nationalism became as prominent as could be, and was noted and treated by the British parliament through the statute of Westminster, which granted Canada self governance on international affairs, and became equal with the UK in terms of international relationships.
  • Newfoundland's Incorporation

    The last Canadian province is integrated and becomes a part of Canada
  • The Canada Act

    Passing UK parliament, this act granted Canadian government the ability to create their own constitution, which Canadians did.
